LE MANS, France — For 24 hours in June, this medium-sized town about 120 miles southwest of Paris was the focal point of the automotive universe as 55 cars raced from afternoon into darkness and back to daylight, covering more than 3,000 miles.

 “Le Mans is the greatest race for wheeled vehicles since ‘Ben-Hur,’” said Jürgen Pippig, head of communications for Audi Motorsport, during a pre-race press conference on June 13.
